In 1864 a cornerstone was laid for a small rural church outside the village of Martins Creek, Pennsylvania, known today as Three Church Hill. The Civil War was raging and a year later Abraham Lincoln would be assassinated. In 1864 both Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were teenagers. Henry Ford was a three-year- old toddler. To travel from Easton to Philadelphia one would have to travel on foot, by horse, or by boat.
Over the next 150 years America would experience cataclysmic changes both in industry and lifestyle. Through drought, depression and two World Wars the Trinity Lutheran church stood as a steady sheltering place for both worship and community.Beneath the church’s simple wooden rafters, weddings took place, births were celebrated, and funerals were held.
In 1958 the combined congregations of Trinity and Mt. Zion adopted the name of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
In recent years with declining membership the church’s future was suddenly at risk. A group of concerned citizens joined together to form the non-profit, Three Church Hill Arts &Historical Society, a vibrant cultural center and art center.
This small rural church offered a place of quiet contemplation and prayer during some of our country’s most violent upheavals. In an age of Knock-it Down and Pave It Over, we hope to keep this cherished building standing as a reminder of the wellbeing it provided and the rich opportunities, we hope to offer our community within its sturdy walls.
