We’ll begin at the Bell Tower Cultural Center, a building ripe with history, as its cornerstones were laid during the height of the Civil War. There, children’s book author, Elvira Woodruff, will give a lively presentation on the different facets of writing historical fiction. This is an inside peek into a writer’s creative world.
“For me the best part of my job has been the research,” Elvira says. “It’s taken me up to an old cemetery in Maine, an 18th century house in Boston, across the ocean to the Tower of London, a lighthouse in Cornwall, and onto so many different adventures, all in the name of research. I would wager that every book an author writes comes with a life story that changes their life in some way.”
After twenty -five books, and thirty -five years of honing her craft, Elvira Woodruff has a wealth of experience and stories to share. This is a unique opportunity to delve into the craft of writing about history.
Next, we’ll step outside to tour the 18th century cemetery, where 24 Revolutionary War soldiers are buried. Participants will then take part in a historical memory walk, searching tombstones for names, dates, and interesting facts.
This field trip into history will end back at the Bell where refreshments will be served, including George Washington’s favorite dessert, ice cream. And how do we know our first president had a hankering for this sweet treat? Why research of course!
Please join us for an entertaining afternoon where creativity and history meet to form an interesting, and delicious experience.
